József Rónai Rippl Painter

1861 - 1927

He was a pharmacist and then studied painting in Munich, in Paris, where he became Mihály Munkácsy's assistant. The members of the Nabis (Prophets) painters' group became acquainted with them, and participated in their exhibitions several times. His friend, James Pitcairn Knowles, Scottish painter introduced Aristide Maillol with whom he was also in close contact, and in the nineties, Gauguin and Cézanne welcomed him in his studio. The Hungarian audience first saw his works in public exhibition in 1900, and in that time he received the most prestigious awards to artists in Paris. In 1902 he settled permanently in his hometown of Kaposvár. During the outbreak of the World War he was in France, from the internment camp to Maillol and Maurice Denis. His autobiography of important source work, the memory of his raised daughter and his brother, Ödön's legacy. From Rippl-Róna, a museum was inaugurated in Kaposvár (his brother's art collection here), his last residence, the Rome villa preserves his memory unchanged.
